About

My primary research centers on Japanese role-playing games. I place games within their cultural and historical context to draw out how players derive meaning from games. In particular, I am interested in the emergence of Japanese role-playing games as a sub-genre, how players understand its contours, and how developers have challenged those assumed beliefs.

Some of my favorite games include Tokimeki Memorial 2 (KCET, 1999); Gunparade March (Alfa System, 2000); Unlimited SaGa (Squaresoft, 2001); Sakura Wars 3 (Red Company, Overworks, 2001); and Taikou Risshiden V (Koei, 2004).

My secondary research more broadly focuses on Japanese media, including animation, cinema, literature, and music. I enjoy fantasy, mystery, and science-fiction, especially the work of Mamoru Oshii; Mariko Ohara; and Moto Hagio.
